Sony Xperia Z, SP and L; robotics, Madeon and plenty of balls

Sony Mobile has reason to celebrate, the Xperia Z is in shops now, it’s been very well received by folks like us and word on the street is it’s selling like hot cakes. Not content with one corker, Sony’s also got two mid-rangers en route: the Sony Xperia SP and Xperia L. And how does one of the world’s most reputable brands go about heralding its three latest spawnlings? In style, that’s how.

With the Sony Xperia Z launch party last week in the heart of Bloomsbury, London, Sony brought together Madeon, paint, robots and a ball pool; oh, and of course, some ridiculously good smartphones.

Kicking things off with the music and fresh faced Madeon was at the helm. You’ll be able to see from the video footage, he was providing a soundtrack to some synchronised robotics, which, were frankly speaking, mesmerising. Fluid, hydraulic precision made the whole dance look like a couple of interplaying Autobots engaging in a bout of Capoeira.

Paint was gushing from buckets in their beaks and colour was pouring over Perspex light boxes stacked atop one another. The whole shebang was orchestrated to echo Sony’s colour campaign, showcasing the Xperia Z’s ability to deal with the elements at the Holi festival in India, all the while looking fantastic.

All this wasn’t just for the sake of having fun and splurging cash though. The Xperia Z launch event also showed off phones seldom seen on these shores thus far, the Sony Xperia SP and Xperia L. You can read more about both in their respective hands-on first looks and expect to see them in shops around April.

The Xperia SP, pictured below is a dual-core smartypants with a 720p 4.6-inch display, huge 2370mAh battery, as well as a colourful illuminated transparent strip at the base for some added fun factor, a la the Sony Xperia U.
The Sony Xperia L is altogether lower end, though still dual-core and very smart, packing Android 4.1. Showcasing a 4.3-inch FWVGA resolution display and a more Xperia J like form factor, it’s far from unimpressive in its own right. Both these phones will ship with 8-megapixel Sony Exmor RS camera sensors and be available in a range of three colours: red, white and black.

Despite the three Xperias styles not looking all that cohesive side by side, given the fact we gave the Sony Xperia Z 4 ½ in our review, and are initially impressed by the SP and L, we’d hazard a guess that this will be a pretty good year for Sony Mobile. Keep your eyes peeled for our Xperia SP and Xperia L reviews en route – and of course the daddy of Android tablets, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z.

What do you think? Reckon the Sony Xperia Z, Xperia SP and Xperia L make for adequate successors to last year’s Xperia S, Xperia P and Xperia U; or are you holding out for HTC, Samsung’s offerings? Answers on a postcard.
