Screengrabs of new Xperia Z2 interface reveal a ton about the new camera features, plus some extra nifty gesture tools
A whole bunch of Xperia Z2 screengrabs have appeared online, revealing quite a lot about the new flagship’s features. Most interesting is the camera menu, which shows a 4k video option as well as slow-motion shooting and other arty effects.
We’re expecting most new premium handsets to support 4k video, following in the footsteps of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Acer Liquid S2. The ability to shoot Ultra HD video on your mobile means we should see a sharp rise in 4k content online, great news if you’ve forked out thousands of pounds on one of them swanky new tellies.
A new ‘Timeshift Video’ mode has also been added, which shoots video at a mega-high frame rate (e.g. 120 frames-per-second) and then plays the video back at a slower rate, producing a slow-mo effect. We’ve seen this implemented most successfully on Apple’s iPhone 5s, which allows you to retrospectively speed up and slow down any sections of a video. It’s a gimmick, sure, but at least it’s a cool one. Self-made Matrix shots ahoy.
Other new arty effects include ‘Background Defocus’, which keeps your subject sharp while blurring everything behind.
The screengrabs reveal a bevy of gesture features too, many of which are very familiar. Smart backlight control, for instance, keeps your screen on as long as you’re looking at it, while you can also answer your phone by lifting it to your face.
