Joining Samsung in suffering smartphone supply setbacks, another unlikely large player in the shape of Sony is stating a surprise stock shortage when it comes to rolling out its 4K-capable Xperia Z2.
Following on from our news of yesterday that Samsung’s S5 production problems in South Korea had led to a massive 1-2 million unit shortfall in release day stock, today Sony has held its collective hands up and coughed to “a component manufacturing issue from a 3rd party who make a part for the phone”, according to a spokesperson from UK retailer Unlocked Mobiles. This now means that the Japanese giant can only meet the device demands of pre-order punters this April and has been forced to push back the Z2’s global general sale date to May 1st.
Now, minds far more suspicious and cynical than ours might suspect some kind of cunning plan in place, designed to drive demand further for both Samsung and Sony’s belated smart-blowers by feeding off the overly fervent attitudes of some smartphone fanatics towards new releases, in a kind of ‘treat them mean keep them keen’ ploy. But being the level-headed bunch that we are, we’re not in the business of considering crazy conspiracy theories, so we’ll just chalk it up to coincidence; really weird coincidence.
Focusing on the phone itself, the Sony Xperia Z2 will certainly be worth the wait. Capable of recording at 4K resolution, it features a 5.2-inch Full HD TRILUMINOUS display, a waterproof glass and aluminium body, a 20.7-megapixel camera, NFC, a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 2.3GHz quad-core processor, runs on Android 4.4 (KitKat) and comes with a capacious 3200mAh built-in battery.
Reassuringly, Sony says it is “working tirelessly to maximise stock levels”. So, despite the delay, at least all Xperia-expectant will be able to make a May Day call; especially if they’ve ended up out of their depth in the water testing it…
