Sony’s latest flagship phone, the Sony Xperia Z4, looks like it’ll be a Japan-only release – but that’s not a massive disappointment.
If you’re a major Sony fan and living in the UK, we’ve got some bad news about the Japanese giant’s latest smartphone. The Xperia Z4 has finally been announced following a notable silence from Sony Mobile at CES and MWC, the new phone is set to be a Japanese launch only.
However, a cursory look at the Xperia Z4’s specs shows why Sony probably decided against launching the phone here in the west.
The Xperia Z4 is a touch slimmer than last year’s Xperia Z3 (6.9mm versus 7.3mm) making it the thinnest Sony flagship phone to date, but the design is practically the same besides that, right down to the water-proofing. You get the same 5.2-inch screen rocking the same Full HD resolution, plus the same sexy curved edges and glass front and back panels.
The processor has been upgraded from a Snapdragon 801 to the latest Snapdragon 810, and now there’s a 64GB model – but like the Xperia Z3, there’s a micro SD memory card slot to expand as much as you like anyway.
And while the Xperia Z4 boasts an upgraded 5.1-megapixel selfie cam (not a surprise for the Asian market), the rear snapper is the same 20.7-megapixel shooter found on last year’s Z3.
So more of a gentle increment than a fresh new take on a flagship phone from Sony. We’d be surprised if the Xperia Z4 ever made it to the UK and it certainly seems to be Asia-only from the early press materials. So the wait for a new Sony flagship here in Blighty continues, and we’re hoping more than ever that it’ll be worth that wait.
