Sony Xperia Z5 Compact: best phone for shooting 4K video

How long can your phone shoot 4K video for? We’re pretty impressed by the effort put in by the new Sony Xperia Z5 Compact, here’s why.

Sony’s Xperia Z5 Compact is the smallest smartphone on the market capable of shooting 4K video and the results are pretty outstanding thanks to the company’s impressive imaging skills.

Here’s the 4K test footage we shot for the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact review.

What we found most intriguing however is that unlike its rivals, the Z5 Compact isn’t limited by a predefined length when shooting 4K video, but rather the amount of accessible storage on offer and whether the phone was ran the risk of overheating.

Most rivals limit your 4K fun to clips of five minutes in length at a time, but based on our tests the Z5 Compact was happy to capture a full 24 minutes 37 seconds of 4K video goodness before the internal thermostat decided enough was enough.

The phone threw up a warning about overheating at the 21-minute-mark, but kept shooting almost four more minutes before halting recording automatically. The end result is an unnecessarily long 4K clip (for our purposes at least) that weighs in at a significant 9.5GB.

So if you’re in the market for a 4K-capable phone unrestrained by video length, the Z5 Compact (and the Z5) looks like the best tool for capturing crispy time lapses or a messy night out in ultra high definition if that’s what you’re after.
