Sony Xperia Z5: In a nutshell

What to expect from Sony’s Xperia Z5 mobile, set to launch September 2015, which may come in three flavours and packing some sexy new camera tech.

Sony Xperia Z5: Why should I care?

Sony’s flagship Xperia phones are the sexiest handsets out there, packing shiny glass panels and curves in all the right places. But it’s what’s inside that counts, and Sony doesn’t disappoint with some of the best mobile camera tech around, as well as sharp and colourful Full HD panels.

Admittedly, the Xperia Z3+ was a stumble, but only because of that pesky Snapdragon 810 chipset, which causes the phone to overheat. The Z3+ was little more than a stop-gap before the real new flagship, the Sony Xperia Z5, set to launch in September. Expect big things.

Sony Xperia Z5: Specs and features to expect

For a start, there might be three new models unveiled all at once this September – more than likely given how quiet Sony Mobile has been this year. The Xperia Z5 is likely to keep Sony’s standard 5.2-inch screen (perhaps with some minor tweaks), while the Xperia Z5 Compact will be under 5-inches and the Xperia Z5 Ultra will be over 5.5-inches and likely pack a Quad HD display. So, something for everyone.

The Xperia Z5 will be the first to pack Sony’s 20.7-megapixel Exmor RS IMX230 CMOS sensor, revealed last November after the Z3 was already out. This upgraded camera may not pack extra megapixels (unnecessary) but does boast 192-point auto-focus, which should make for instant shots and excellent motion tracking.

Sony is apparently sticking with Qualcomm for the Xperia Z5 despite those overheating problems, but thankfully upgrading to the new Snapdragon 820 processor which will hopefully be Qualcomm back on its game. We’re expecting 4GB of RAM too.

As for design, the Xperia Z5 could ditch the old OmniBalance design and go all-metal, if some rumours are to be believed. There’s also chatter of a fingerprint scanner, which makes sense given the rise of mobile payments in 2015.

Sony Xperia Z5: UK price and release date

So far there’s no solid word on the Sony Xperia Z5’s UK price or release date, but the phone should launch at the very start of September, so we reckon it will hit UK stores at the end of September for £499 SIM-free.
