Press images of Sony’s QX1 lens, which aims to turn your phone into a fully-functioning camera, have emerged.
Building on last year’s QX10 and QX100 18 and 20.2-megapixel models, the QX1 goes one better in that it lets you use other SLR lenses on your phone.
The QX1 features an APS-C-sized sensor, the same sensor that’s found in many digital SLR cameras and comes with a mount, which you can opt to buy separately.
As for the QX1’s lens itself, it’s said to house a 24-megapixel sensor, eclipsing the QX10 and QX100 in the raw firepower department. There’s also a pop-up LED flash meaning you’re not restricted to using your phone’s flash.
All this should, hopefully, add up to bigger, more detailed pictures with higher contrast and improved colour reproduction.
The QX1 connects to your smartphone via WiFi or NFC (depending if your phone supports it) making the connection a lot more reliable that using Bluetooth.
The pictures show the QX1 mounted on what’s said to be the Xperia Z3 and although it doesn’t give us much information about the smartphone itself, it does give some weight to the story that the handset will be announced with the lens.
The clip-on lens mount is said to cost around $400 (£245) without a lens and $600 (£365) with a 16-50mm lens included.
According to sources from SonyAlphaRumors the QX1 will be announced today alongside the Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact, Z3 Tablet Compact and Sony’s new collection of wearables at its launch event at the IFA 2014 trade show in Berlin.
