Sony’s Xperia M5 looks better than the Xperia Z3+

Sony’s latest mid-range mobile, the Sony Xperia M5, actually looks like a better phone than recent flagship update, the Xperia Z3+, packing a solid 21.5-megapixel camera, Full HD 5-inch screen and slender water-resistant frame.

Sony has been unusually quiet so far in 2015, releasing just one new premium phone, the Xperia Z3+, as well as the sexy and super-slim Xperia Z4 Tablet. Sadly, while the tablet was a fantastic slab of tech, the Z3+ struggled with overheating issues thanks to the troubled Snapdragon 810 processor packed inside.

Thankfully Sony has shunned Snapdragon for the new Xperia M5 mid-range mobile, freshly launched here in the UK. And the 64-bit MediaTek octa-core processor (backed by 3GB RAM) should still provide solid everyday performance while also keeping the Xperia M5 nice and cool.

Good news in itself, but it’s the rest of the Xperia M5’s specs list that really has us excited. In fact, this looks every bit the flagship phone in pretty much every department despite its reduced asking price.

For a start, the Xperia M5 packs a 21.5-megapixel Exmor RS f/2.2 camera, which along with Sony’s Superior Auto mode should take awesome everyday snaps and capture super-sharp 4k video. Sony’s Hybrid Autofocusing technology should make for a fast shutter that keeps your subject clear, even if it’s on the move. And that rear camera is accompanied by a 13-megapixel front-facing lens with HDR.

The phone’s slender 7.6mm body is fully water-resistant, just like Sony’s flagship phones, and encases a 5-inch Full HD (1920×1080) display that packs the Bravia Engine 2 software for improved contrast and image sharpness.

Rounding up the Xperia M5’s specs is 4G support and a 2600mAh battery. You also get 16GB of storage, expandable via microSD.

As for a UK price and release date, the Xperia M5 currently isn’t slated for a UK release but we reckon that’ll change. Else you’ll have to import for around £299, a price which makes this mobile just as enticing as the freshly-launched OnePlus Two.

Following the Xperia M5, we’re expecting Sony to unleash two new flagship handsets on September 2nd, rumoured to be the Xperia S60 and Xperia S70. And Sony also just launched a new 6-inch Xperia C5 Ultra phone, which looks to be a serious media machine for those on a budget.
