Toshiba Excite X10 Android tablet: Hands-on photos and video

Jury’s still out on whether or not the world’s slimmest tablet will make it to UK shores (at least under this guise) but that won’t stop us from having a look.

The Toshiba Excited X10 is a slender and beautiful thing. 7.7mm thick and boasting a 10.1-inch screen that’s protected by Gorilla Glass. It’s exterior is wrapped up in a fetching brushed aluminium-effect jacket that somehow compliments the slimness. At just 535 grams it’s incredibly light too.

Running around the edge is a groove that makes it look like the Excite X10 is sandwiched together. It’s a design quirk that we’re not sure if we’re totally cool with but it’s different and doesn’t totally detract from the Excite X10’s overall look and feel.

Cameras come in the form of a 5-megapixel rear-facing main unit and a 2-megapixel front-facer for video chat, self-portraits and whatever else you’d want a front-facing camera for.

There’s a nice amount of connections available, a 3.5mm headphone jack, micro USB, mini HDMI and microSD. Its powered by Texas Instruments’ OMAP 4430 processor (1.2GHz) and 1GB of RAM, so the Excite X10 ought to hold its own against the current crop of Honeycomb slates.

Speaking of Honeycomb, on which it’s running right now, we understand that an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is on the cards.

How much will it cost though? The Excite X10 will come in two versions; $530 for 16GBs of storage (roughly £340) and $600 (about £390) for the 32GB version. The Toshiba Excite X10 release date should be sometime in first quarter.

It’s really not much different from the Toshiba AT200 we saw at IFA last year. Expansys has a pre-order page up for a 32GB version of the AT200, but there’s no price announced for this yet. £390 or anything below that would be nice…

Update: check out our hands-on video of the Toshiba Excite X10 as well.
