Toshiba Honeycomb tablet available for pre-order in US: cheaper than iPad 2

Toshiba US has announced more details its first Android Honeycomb tablet. Set for pre-order from June 13th, the Thrive currently has a starting price of $429, compared to $499 for the Apple iPad 2

Running Honeycomb (officially Androd 3.1), Toshiba Thrive specs include a 10.1-inch LED backlit screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a primary 5-megapixel camera and secondary 2-megapixel camera, but there are some subtle hardware differences.

Although it follows the same regulation black as the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the back cover is ridged – what Toshiba calls ‘Easy Grip,’ and unusually it is replaceable, with yellow, pink, while, blue and green backs. There are also silver accents around the camera.

Connectivity looks impressive, alongside HDMI, WiFi and Bluetooth; there’s a USB 2.0 port (a feature we’ve only seen on the Acer Iconia Tab A500) and also an SD card slot for playing back photos or expanding the storage.

The Thrive is powered by a Nvidia Tegra 2 processor and also includes SRS speakers, adding surround sound effects to your movie playback.

According to Toshiba UK, the Thrive is a US only tablet and although the UK will be getting a tablet from Toshiba, there’s no information of any launch date yet. Stay tuned to Recombu and we’ll bring you more news as soon as we get it.
