UK spend more time using mobile internet than the rest of the world

We feel no shame in our love of technology here in the UK and rightly so. The fast-paced world of tech waits for no-one and with the prominent image of the UK on the world stage as a place of business and innovation, it should come as no surprise that the majority of us are pretty clued up when it comes to tech.

According to a report assembled by Ofcom, the UK plays host to a nation of mobile internet users, with an average 424MB of mobile data usage utilised by every smartphone user each month. The report accumulated data from 17 countries including the UK, US, China, India, Russia, Brazil, France, Germany and Sweden. Our mobile browsing and social networking habits are some of the most prevalent out of all the countries featured in the report with 62% of British 18 to 24 year olds being the most active mobile social networkers on their smartphones and tablets in the world.

Facebook internationally

Social networks in general have been the primary driving force behind such an increase in mobile data usage, with 40% of UK adults accessing services like Facebook and Twitter from their smartphone every day. 60% of all UK mobile users own a smartphone, which has risen by 46% in the past year, placing us second only to Germany. Tablet ownership places us 5th worldwide with 19% of the population in possession of one, however Ofcom’s Director of Research, James Thickett expects that figure to increase dramatically with the effects of the Christmas shopping period not yet taken into account.

Not only are we buying more mobile devices and using more mobile data than the majority of the rest of the world, but we’re also spending more online, with an average spend of £1083 per user each year online.
