Unbranded HTC Desire HD and Incredible S to get Android Gingerbread: Release date, 16 May

The confused Android update saga continues, although Google’s recent announcement that new handsets will carry the very latest version of Android for at least 18 months should avoid these problems in the future.

Now HTC has said that the latest version of Android for smartphones, Gingerbread (2.3), has a confirmed release date for SIM-free versions of their HTC Desire HD and Incredible S- that is, with no built-in phone network gubbins or apps.

HTC said, in a note posted on their UK Facebook page: “We’ve been pushing this really hard and are pleased to announce that we are aiming to have the HTC Gingerbread update for unlocked HTC Desire HD and HTC Incredible S models available on 16th May 2011.”

“For those waiting for their specific operator update, rest assured that we’re working very closely with each operator to get this just right and will update you as soon as we possibly can.”

The update has already gone live for Vodafone customers, but we’re yet to hear from other phone networks in the UK when we can expect updates from them.
