UNICEF’s Tap Project rewards children around the world with clean drinking water if you can leave your phone alone for at least ten minutes.
If like us you’re a smartphone addict, then the thought of leaving it alone for more than a few seconds may turn you into a sweaty mess. So what if the act of not touching your smartphone helped children in need somewhere in the world?
That’s the idea behind the UNICEF Tap Project. For most of us, there’s a water cooler in the office, a BRITA in the fridge or a tap offering up clean, clear, fresh running water. Something so simple isn’t available to everyone and the Tap Project challenges you to live without your precious smartphone for ten minutes to help fund donations that bring clean water to children who would otherwise have none.
Head to UNICEF’S Tap Project mobile site from your smartphone’s web browser and it’ll hijack your screen and accelerometer. So long as you leave your handset well alone, a clock will begin timing how long your handset remains stationary for, all the while spouting facts on how many photos of food have hit Instagram in the time you haven’t picked your handset up, how much clean water has been brought to people through UNICEF’s efforts of the years and other interesting, education drops of knowledge.
Provided you hit the ten-minute mark (you can go on for as long as you want to contribute more), the Tap Project’s current sponsor, Giorgio Armani will donate the money to cover a day’s worth of clean water for one child.
