Vodafone has become the UK’s first telecomms provider to be awarded the Government’s Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation, for keeping customer data ultra-secure.
Data security has been a pretty hot topic of late, with dozens of big companies finding their storage systems hacked and customer data pinched or leaked online. Vodafone has responded by wrapping some serious virtual chains around its data banks, making it the first telecomms body in the UK to pass the Government’s tough new cyber security accreditation.
The Cyber Essentials Plus scheme was launched on June 5th this year, and concerns a number of stringent criteria which an organisation must meet. To pass the accreditation, a company has to make sure its data and IT systems are seriously protected against cyber attacks.
From October 1st 2014, the Government will demand that all suppliers bidding for contracts involving the handling of personal and sensitive data be Cyber Essentials certified.
Vodafone’s Head of Technology Security, Howard Pinto, commented on the accreditation: “We take cyber security and protection of our customers’ data very seriously. We want our customers to be assured that when they do business with us, we are doing everything possible to protect their data, our critical systems and business operations.”
