Vodafone’s Ultra is back for 2016, with the new Smart Ultra 7 – a respectable high-end mid-ranger with 4G LTE, an expansive Full HD screen and a pair of promising snappers.

We say ‘high-end mid-ranger’ as the new Smart Platinum 7 has raised the bar on what Vodafone classes as a flagship device, but you still get plenty of bang for your buck with the Smart Ultra 7, which launched on PAYG for £135 on Monday.
Much like the Platinum 7, the Ultra adopts a more refined box design than the likes of the Smart Prime 7, with a grey finish accented by a wireframe illustration of the phone. The box also highlights some of the key hardware and software features and points you to a dedicated webpage, where you can explore the phone further.
Lift the lid and the phone is the first thing that greets you. Powered off, the introduction of a physical home button gives it a similar appearance to Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2, however, look closer and you’ll spot the backlit iconography of the capacitive keys either side.
The 5.5-inch Full HD LCD is skirted by thin bezels, above the screen sits a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with a dedicated LED flash and underneath the removable back, you’ll find slots for a microSIM and a microSD card, letting you bolster the phone’s 16GB of integrated storage.
Underneath the phone is a card holder containing a quick-start guide and all the necessary warranty information, leaving only the essential accessories yet to open up. In the next compartment within the Ultra 7’s box, you’ll find in-ear headphones with an inline microphone and one-button remote, although they only offer one pair of buds, so they won’t necessarily fit all ear shapes. There’s also a power adapter and a microUSB to USB lead for charging, however, the jump from a Qualcomm to a MediaTek chipset between the Ultra 6 and the Ultra 7 means there isn’t even the possibility of fast charging functionality.
The phone packs an octa-core MediaTek MT6755M processor, backed up by 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel primary camera and a 2960mAh battery too. Stay tuned for our full review soon.
