What is the iPhone SE, what are the iPhone SE’s specs and how can I buy it?

Apple has finally revealed the iPhone SE in its big March 21st launch event, but what is the iPhone SE, what are its specs, how does it compare with other iPhones like the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6s, when can you buy it in the UK and how much does it cost?

What is the iPhone SE?

Apple’s latest iPhone is a curious hybrid of old and new iPhone features. Most of the iPhone SE’s features are ripped straight from the iPhone 6s, the 4.7-inch handset that Apple most recently launched in September 2015. However, the iPhone SE is a 4-inch mobile, just like Apple’s older phones such as the iPhone 5s, so you get all of those modern features in a more compact, easy-to-handle frame.

That’s something which is bound to appeal to nostalgic Apple fans who disapprove of the all-new bigger iPhones from the past two years.

What size is the iPhone SE’s screen and is it the same display as the iPhone 5s?

The iPhone SE packs a 4-inch Retina display, just like the iPhone 5s, which still boasts very sharp, clear image reproduction even when compared with more modern rivals. Both phones use the exact same screen resolution (1136×640), so photos, videos and everything else will look just as crisp on Apple’s new phone.

Of course, this 4-inch panel is considerably smaller than the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays found on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, and there’s no support for Apple’s 3D Touch feature.

What processor does the iPhone SE use?

Apple has packed its own A9 processor inside the iPhone SE. The A9 is also found in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus (unveiled in September 2015), so you can expect lightning-fast performance for some time to come, while iOS 9 should run with a satisfying smoothness.

What are the camera specs of the iPhone SE?

Apple has also stuffed its new 12-megapixel iSight camera into the iPhone SE. This is one of the best mobile snappers around right now, previously featured in the iPhone 6s, so should appease anyone serious about their mobile photography.

You can shoot 4K video as well as slow motion and time lapse footage, with the ability to edit after shooting. And the improved front-facing 5-megapixel FaceTime camera is perfect for selfies, with a new ‘flash’ feature that lights up your face.
