WiFi calling coming to Samsung devices on Vodafone this autumn

Vodafone has teased the promise of WiFi calling for quite some time, but the company has just confirmed that it’ll be coming to select Samsung devices this autumn.

Word of VoLTE and WiFi calling from Vodafone first made headlines back in March, but the network infrastructure is finally here, along with a handful of compatible handsets too.

If you’re lucky enough to be picking up a shiny new iPhone 6s or 6s Plus today, Vodafone says that both handsets are already ready to make use of the feature, whilst the carrier also just revealed that Samsung’s top flagships, the Galaxy S6S6 Edge and S6 Edge+ will be able to enjoy that same freedom in the coming months.

Check out this handy WiFi calling explainer video from Vodafone’s YouTube channel.

WiFi calling routes your conventional phone calls over known WiFi networks, which is particularly useful when you have poor mobile signal, or none at all (as would be the case for London commuters on the Underground).

You don’t have separate WiFi calling minutes or anything else so complicated. Just as long as you’re on a Pay monthly Red or Red Value Bundle, Red+ or Business Premier plan and sport a compatible phone, you’ll be able to enjoy the perks of this new technology.

Update – 17:00, 25/9/15: After reaching out to Vodafone that carrier confirmed that WiFi calling support will be available on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ too. The article has been updated to reflect this fact.
