With a name like WikiPad, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Jimmy Wales (or Julian Assange) had designed a tablet.
No doubt if either had actually happened it would’ve been a talking point, the reality is perhaps equally as awesome. The WikiPad is the first glasses-less 3D Android tablet that runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
The screen measures 8-inches across the diagonal and looks to boast a display resolution of 1920 x 1080. Capable of playing back 2D and 3D video in a wide range of formats, it looks like the ideal slate for the 3D movie enthusiast.
8GB of flash storage comes built in and there’s a microSD slot that can accept cards of up to 64GB in size. But that’s not all the WikiPad has to offer…
Quake Live? On MY Android tablet?
As you can see from the press render, the 8-inch slate also slots into a separate gaming dock, transforming it into a Wii U-like gaming rig complete with two analogue sticks, a d-pad and four colourful buttons.
Thanks to the mini-HDMI connection, big screen gaming using the WikiPad as an elongated controller looks to be on the cards.
Our minds are literally reeling with the gaming possibilities the WikiPad offers – Dungeon Defenders, Minecraft: Pocket Edition and Samurai II: Vengeance immediately suggest themselves as does Grand Theft Auto III. But those are all last year’s games, what about the future?
Over on WikiPad’s Facebook page, there are links to Quake Live and Phosphor Beta pages, hinting at support for high-def FPS action. This isn’t explicitly mentioned in the release we spotted though so it might be wishful thinking.
So far, so promising – we’ll be keeping an eye on the WikiPad that’s coming ‘Spring 2012’ for an undisclosed sum.
