You can remove the Galaxy S6’s battery after all…if you’re brave

Despite first impressions, you will be able to slap a new battery in your Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge after all – provided you’re technically capable enough to attempt the job.

Owing to the new glass-and-metal design of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and its novel cousin, the Galaxy S6 Edge, people were expecting the battery to be locked away inside forever, untouchable to man. However, the manuals which come packed with both devices provide step-by-step instructions on how to take care of the task and swap out the battery, even though Samsung reckons the average consumer should stay well away.

Sadly this intricate procedure isn’t just a simple matter of popping a back-plate off, like it used to be. You’ll need to get seriously involved with the proper tools to get that battery out, and it certainly doesn’t look like carrying around a spare is going to be a viable option, for a quick exchange when you’re running out of juice.

The manuals are also clear about who Samsung wants to take care of the task – and it isn’t you. They state “These instructions are only for your service provider or an authorised agent. Damage or faults caused by the unauthorised removal of the battery are not covered by warranty.”

To accomplish the job, you’ll need to remove the SIM card tray and then heat the adhesive which holds the rear plate in place, before gingerly removing it. Then it’s just a matter of removing another dozen screws and disconnecting the battery from the (very expensive) device’s mainboard. What could possibly go wrong?

Obviously, if you’re technically capable and have the right tools, you could quite easily slip a new battery in your Galaxy S6 when the time arrives. But for regular folk it’s unlikely to be an option and the thought of nixing your warranty and b0rking your device in one fell swoop is unlikely to appeal.
