Hot on heels of the sexy BMW 4 Series Convertible comes the sun-embracing, tarmac-shredding M4 Convertible.
Posers and lovers of sunny weather and fast convertibles, take note. The BMW M4 Convertible has been officially announced. The open-top Bimmer will go on sale from September 2014 priced from £60,730.
The four-seater BMW M4 Convertible uses the same engine found in the M3 Saloon and M4 Coupé, which means the 3.0-litre six-cylinder TwinPower Turbo lump produces 431 horsepower and 550Nm of torque from a mere 1,850rpm.
This allows a 0 to 62mph sprint in 4.6 seconds with the 6-speed manual and 4.4 seconds with the optional £2,645 M Double Clutch transmission. The top speed is a restricted 155mph in either case. Fuel economy is an impressive 31mpg, while emissions come in at 213g/km (32.5mpg and 203g/km for the M DCT).
The BMW M4 Convertible has a kerb weight of 1,750kg, making it 60kg lighter than its M3 Convertible predecessor. Weight saving has been achieved, in part, with the use of carbon fibre reinforced plastic for the propeller shaft and the engine’s strut brace.
Adaptive M suspension is standard. This allows the driver to switch between three modes of varying stiffness: Comfort, Sport and Sport+. Active M Differential helps put the power where it needs to go, improving traction and directional stability.
The star of the show is the roof, which folds away neatly in 20 seconds at speeds up to 8mph. Not quite the 30mph the Porsche Boxster allows, but enough to keep you from having to stop completely. New headlining in the three-part metal roof makes the cockpit quieter by 2dB.
Luggage capacity is 220 litres with the roof down and 370 litres with it up. A new ‘Loading-aid’ lets you raise the folded roof to get at your luggage in six seconds with the roof packed away.
Standard equipment on the UK BMW M4 Convertible on top of the usual M badges and styling includes the aforementioned Adaptive M suspension, 19-inch M light alloy wheels, BMW Professional media package with Bluetooth and USB connectivity, front and rear Park Distance Control, heated front seats and folding exterior mirrors.
