VW has announced the Beetle Dune is going into production, meaning you will soon be able to tear up the beach like it was the 1970s.
The VW Beetle Dune – first seen in concept form at the 2014 Detroit Motor Show – will be unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show. That includes its rugged looks and a slightly raised height of 10mm to improve ground clearance and make it more off-roadey.
Inspiration has been drawn from 70s dune buggies. A more prominent stance has been created by adding accentuated side sills, widening of the body by 14mm via black plastic cladding within the wheelhouses and the use of 18-inch black alloys and chunkier tyres more suited to going off-road.
At the front is a a large central air grille with honeycomb mesh, while the back features new LED rear lights and a dune badge.
It will be offered in coupe and cabriolet versions, powered by a choice of three petrol and two turbo diesels ranging from 103bhp to 218bhp ─ all carried over from the standard Beetle. That also means it will be front-wheel drive only so no 4×4 shenanigans.
As for the interior, it has stitching and trim that matches the exterior colour in addition to a spot of infotainment system luxury and four seats. Meanwhile two new paintjobs ─ Dark Bronze metallic and Sandstorm Yellow metallic ─ will help you stand out.
The VW Beetle Dune will go on sale in early 2016 for an undisclosed price. Expect a premium on the standard £16,275 hatchback.
Update: VW announced the European price will be €23,625 for the coupe and €27,800 for the cabriolet. UK prices are still unannounced.
