Volvo XC90 gets R-Sport makeover

Volvo has announced its sportiest version of the new XC90, the R-Design. The new model is designed to give the seven-seater ‘a sporty makeover’, according to the Swedish manufacturer.

A small number of external changes separate the XC90 R-Design XC90 from its siblings, including 20-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, gloss black mesh on the front grille, tinted rear windows and silver-effect door mirrors.

The interior has also been given a boost, with a 12.3-inch TFT display and infotainment system, leather/nubruck sports seats, perforated leather-trimmed steering wheel, sports pedals, upgraded interior lighting and a powered front passenger seat with a memory function coming as standard.

In addition, the XC90 R-Design has its own leather-clad R-Design key fob and Drive Mode Settings and Adjustable Steering Force, both of which let you choose different settings for the engine, steering, transmission and, if specced, the air suspension.

Extras carried over from the entry-level XC90 Momentum includes Sensus navigation for getting from A to B, two-zone climate control, City Safety with a full-automatic braking, driver alert control with departure warning, LED headlights, power-operated tailgate and Volvo’s CleanZone air quality system, which keeps the air fresh.

XC90 R-Design cars can be specced with the D5 diesel and T6 Drive-E petrol engines or the T8 Twin Engine hybrid, which uses both electric and petrol power.

Volvo originally unveiled the R-Design back at the Paris Motor Show in 2014 so it’s been a long time coming. In more recent times Volvo gave us Polestar Performance Optimisation upgrade (£865), which increases the torque and horsepower.

Volvo’s XC90 R-Design is available now, priced from £49,785. The entry-level offering starts from £45,750. Watch the Recombu Cars video review here.
