Citroen C4 Cactus Rip Curl Special Edition splashes into view

Citroen has unveiled a special edition C4 Cactus designed for surfers, which will be unveiled at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.

The C4 Cactus Rip Curl Special Edition is a ‘more radical and adventurous’ version of the C4 Cactus crossover that takes inspiration from the surfing brand that started life in 1969.

The C4 Cactus Rip Curl Edition has a few visual differentiators to make it stand out from the standard car, including white door mirrors, white roof bars and a white vertical stripe and Rip Curl logo on the wings.

More practical extras include aluminium-coloured protection plates on the front and rear, adding to its rugged looks and trademark Air Bump door protectors designed to keep common prangs at bay.

A choice if Tapenade Grey, Obsidian Black, Sport Red, Artic Steel and Pearl White will be available, plus a ‘new and unique’ paintjob that is yet to be named.

Building on its off-road credentials are special mud and snow tyres (205/50 R17 89V Goodyear Vector 4Seasons, tyre geeks) and, unique to this model, Grip Control.

Grip Control provides maximum grip and can let the driver choose between five different modes, including Sand (for getting to your surfboard as close to the sea as possible) and Off-Road (for a mixture of slippery surfaces including wet grass).

Inside, Citroen and Rip Curl have gone for Mica Grey fabric seats with orange safety belts. Black part-leather upholstery is an option. Meanwhile grey floor mats with orange stitching and the Rip Curl logo continue the theme.

Two engines are available for the C4 Cactus Rip Curl, the 1.2 PureTech 110 S&S petrol and BlueHDi 100, and both are mated to a manual gearbox as standard. That means a claimed 60.1mpg and 107g/km of CO2 for the former and 83.1mpg and 89g/km for the latter.

Being based on the ‘Flair’ trim means you get a generous level of standard equipment, including rear parking sensors and camera, automatic climate control, cruise control with a speed limiter, tinted windows, six-speaker audio system, navigation and a panoramic roof.

Citroen says the C4 Cactus Rip Curl Special Edition will be on sale in the ‘first half of 2016’. No word on a price, but no doubt it will cost a bit more than the £17,290 C4 Cactus Flair.

If the beach-going C4 Cactus seems familiar, last year Citroen unveiled the Cactus M Concept, an open-top version with a sleeping compartment.
