BMW X4 to break cover at Detroit Motor Show

BMW has more X-prefixed cars than you can shake a gearstick at, and it’s about to add yet another. Joining the X1, X3, X5 and X6 is a new BMW X4, which will go on show at next year’s Detroit Motor Show.

The BMW X4 is expected to be a sportier take on the BMW X3 (pictured).

The BMW X4 is said to based on the same platform as the mid-sized X3 crossover, but will likely feature a more adventurous, coupe-like design. According to Autoweek, it will have a more aggressive, pronounced front end and a rakish, sloping roofline that will give the car a more sporty look, appealing to those those who think the X3 is too much like a hideous, amorphous blob (that’s everyone then).

Underneath the sportier facade, the X4 will likely use the same all-wheel-drive propulsion gubbins as the X3. Expect a combination of four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines that already feature in the X3, alongside a with the option of a souped-up twin-turbocharged six-cylinder petrol model that will formthe basis of a range-topping M edition. There’s also every chance BMW will create diesel-powered X4 M, which uses a version of the 3-litre inline six-cylinder diesel that featured in the X5 and X6 M.

The X4 is set to be previewed for the first time at the Detroit Motor Show in early January 2013. Prices are still TBC, but expect it to retail for slightly more than the £28,500 X3.
