A new addition to the engine line up is the 218PS (215bhp) V6 TDI ultra, which offers 60.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 122g/km. 0 to 62mph takes 7.3 seconds and the top speed is 149mph.

Also available is a 333PS (328bhp) 3.0-litre TFSI petrol and a 320PS (315bhp) 3.0-litre BiTDI Quattro diesel that develops 650Nm of torque. All models have a seven-speed S tronic automatic, but the latter can be specified with a pricier eight-speed tiptronic.

All models now come with LED headlights, 19-inch alloys, sweeping rear indicators, four-zone automatic air conditioning, heated Milano leather seats, MMI navigation, front and rear acoustic parking sensors and a powered tailgate.

S line has a choice of either standard or sports suspension. You can also de-size the alloy wheels from 20 to 19 inches to further improve comfort. Other standard equipment includes Matrix LED headlights that automatically divert their light so there’s no need to ever come off high beam.

Black Edition builds on the aforementioned with a sportier look in the form of a bodykit. Quattro four-wheel drive is standard here.

Bringing in performance alternatives are the S7 and RS 7 models. The former now has 450PS (443bhp), up from 420PS, while emitting 4 per cent less CO2 emissions (215g/km). The latter kicks out 560PS (552bhp), allowing a 0 to 62mph sprint of less than four seconds.

Both cars make use of cylinder on demand technology to keep your fuel bills bearable. The S7 and RS 7 can manage 30.4 and 29.7mpg, respectively. CO2 emissions are 215 and 220g/km, respectively.

An entry-level 3.0 TDI ultra starts from £45,875, rising to £58,925 for a 3.0 BiTDI quattro. Expect to pay £63,375 and £84,480 for the S7 Sportback and RS 7 Sportback, respectively.
