23-year-old made selfie video while being chased by police

Being chased by police? You’re already in trouble. But it’s still probably a bad idea to make a selfie video for a loved one during the pursuit, as 23-year-old Salim Shah found out the hard way.

The young lad decided to make a 33-second goodbye selfie video for his girlfriend while at the wheel. He said: “Listen yeah. I love you, yeah. And I’m going to prison now.”

“At least you know where I am now. I’ll probably be out in six months or something,” he added.

Unfortunately for Shah, who had already been banned from driving just two months before the incident, he was sentenced to a 16-month stint in the slammer at Burnley Crown Court in Lancashire. To add insult to injury, the judge said: “The word stupid runs immediately to mind.”

The 17-minute police chase – in a car he had borrowed from a friend – saw Shah hit nearly 60mph in a 30mph zone, put other motorists in danger, speed through multiple junctions and ignore three red traffic light signals. He then tried to escape on foot but was found hiding in a nearby park in the undergrowth.

Shah was bitten by a police dog twice before he went quietly. When detained he said to officers: “It was a good chase, wasn’t it.”

Shah admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and for possession of six bags of cannabis and a further 4.72grams. He will serve at least eight months and will need to take an extended retest when his two-and-a-half year driving ban awarded previously comes to a close.

Nobody else was hurt during the chase. The two passengers in the car at the time have reportedly disowned him. Watch the selfie video here.
