Bentley's Grand Convertible concept is a two-door droptop monster

This is the Bentley Grand Convertible, and its name sums it up pretty damn well: It’s a massive droptop.

Bentley chief Wolfgang Dürheimer describes it as “embodying elegance beyond compare,” and it’s certainly posh – if that’s what he means. The car has a ‘Sequin Blue’ paintjob — a colour commissioned by a customer who wanted paint to match a sequin from their haute couture gown — and a ‘liquid metal’ finish to the bonnet and windscreen frame.

Elsewhere, the interior is swathed in 14 leather hides, while the hand-made wooden tonneau cover, made of dark-stained burr walnut, is the largest single piece of wood veneer ever seen on a Bentley.

Power comes from the same 530bhp, 811lb ft 6.75-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that powers the Mulsanne Speed, so although it’s massive – five and a half metres to be precise – it’ll have no trouble getting out of its own way.

The Bentley Grand Convertible goes on show at the Los Angeles Auto show this week. If it goes down well there, then there’s every likelihood you’ll see it in in the real world — although not in huge numbers.

It’s still just a concept at this stage, but there’s nothing we can see that particularly precludes it from production. Sure, the market for roofless, two-door luxury barges can’t be particularly massive, but Premier League footballers would surely flock to this thing in droves.

Dürheimer says: “We are eagerly awaiting the response of our customers to this car. We will ensure that this car – if it reaches the roads – will be a highly exclusive, extremely limited collector’s piece.”
