The BMW M3 and M4 are about to get more powerful. A new competition package offers a power upgrade, subtle design tweaks and altered suspension.
The new competition package will be offered as part of the 30th anniversary models in the UK. Unspecified tweaks have increased the 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder engine power of the M3 Saloon, M4 coupe and M4 cabriolet by 19bhp, taking the total to 444bhp.
Torque remains the same, at 405lb/ft, but 0-62mph is said to be a tenth of a second quicker, meaning 4.0 seconds for the M3 saloon and M4 coupe with the seven-speed DCT automatic gearbox and 4.2 for the manual.
The cabriolet, meanwhile, takes 4.5 seconds and 4.2 seconds for the manual and automatic, respectively.
Fuel economy is 34mpg for the M3 saloon and M4 coupe, and 32.5mpg for the cabriolet with the aforementioned DCT so that is unchanged.
Aesthetic extras include 20-inch borrowed from the M4 GTS but painted silver, high-gloss black kidney grille, side air vents, side window trim, exterior mirror bases and side window trim and a badge specific to the model.
BMW has also revised the suspension through the use of new dampers, new springs and new anti-roll bars, which will work with the also revised electronic M differential designed to make better use of those extra horses.
Interior revisions are less noticeable, but buyers will likely appreciate lightweight sports seats in the front and seatbelts with woven stripes.
BMW is yet to reveal a price, but we know the M5 and M6 competition package costs a premium of £7,000 over the standard car so expect the M3 to start from around £62,000.
