BMW has busted out its new mid-sized sports car, the M4 Coupe, killing off the iconic M3 coupe in the process. It’s done away with many of the M3’s staples, too, most notably the 4.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 – dumped in favour of a smaller 3.0-litre twin turbo inline six.
It is a bold move on BMW’s part, Make no mistake, but it’s one that’s paid off big time, we think. The engine philosophy may have changed but to the benefit of the car’s performance. The new engine is more powerful than its predecessor, producing 431hp and 40 per cent more torque — 540Nm.
That’s good for 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds with the M DCT dual-clutch auto box or 4.3 in the manual, with a limited top seed of 155mph, thought BMW can derestrict that to enable 174mph.
The BMW M4’s lightweight architecture plays a large part in facilitating such performance. The M4 is significantly lighter than the car it replaces, with copious use of carbon fibre and aluminium providing a lower centre of gravity, for increased agility.
