Cadillac ATS Coupe is a BMW 4 Series rival

Cadillac ATS Coupe is the manufacturer’s first compact two-door coupe.

Cadillac is hoping to take on the BMW 4 Series and other small luxury coupes with its own creation. The ATS Coupe is the first compact two-door coupe Cadillac has ever built, although whether it will arrive in the UK remains to be seen.

The Cadillac ATS Coupe comes with a choice of two engines. There’s a 2.0-litre borrowed from the Cadillac saloon that produces 272bhp and 400Nm of torque, and a 3.6-litre six-cylinder V6 with 321bhp and 373Nm.

The 2.0-litre can manage 0 to 60mph in 5.6 seconds. A bit slower than the BMW 435i’s 0 to 62mph time of 5.1 seconds, it must be said, but on par with the smaller 428i and 420i. Cadillac is keeping performance details of the 3.5-litre V6 close to its corporate chest.

Both models comes with a six-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive as an option. A manual gearbox can be specified for the 2.0-litre turbo if you like to be more hands on.

Five-link independent rear suspension, Brembo front brakes, 18-inch alloy wheels and a ‘nearly perfect’ 50/50 weight balance and low centre of gravity should help the ATS Coupe get around corners without fanfare.

Spend a few dollars more and you can have the driver-adjustable FE3 sport suspension, which adds Magnetic Ride Control (reads the road and adjusts the damping accordingly), mechanical limited-slip differential, 18-inch summer-performance tyres and a ‘high capacity cooling system’.

A Bose audio system with Active Noise Cancelation technology is standard on all models and can be upgraded to a more impressive 12-speaker variant. 4G, full-colour head-up display, text-to-voice functionality and Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity can also be yours if you have the money.

Cadillac will launch the ATS Coupe, which was unveiled at CES 2014, in the summer. Pricing will be announced soon.
