British purveyor of four-wheeled stupidity Caterham has introduced a variant of the Seven 620R that is said to be ‘the mildly saner, more road-oriented sibling’.
The Caterham 620S comes with various comforts designed to make it more forgiving on UK roads, including a full windscreen, leather seats and a hood and side screens.
Other extras that come with the ‘S’ pack ─ available on other cars in the Seven range ─ include a heater, 15-inch Orcus anthracite alloy wheels with ZZS tyres and road springs and dampers.
A five-speed manual gearbox has also been fitted to the two-seater 620S to help with life on the road, as opposed to the track, although the uprated brake master cylinder and limited-slip differential on the ‘R’ pack are included.
Caterham has also given buyers the option of the S5 chassis. This £2,500 extra is wider than the standard S3 chassis and is said to provide a nicer experience for ‘generously-proportioned customers’ while adding more luggage space and a bigger fuel tank.
Those who order any Caterham Seven can benefit from carbon fibre heated seats for the first time. In the case of the 620S, these cost £995 extra or £600 if you forgo the heated element.
It may be softer in a few areas, but the 620S uses the same 310bhp 2.0-litre, supercharged Ford Duratec engine as the 620R, which means the same delightfully insane performance ─ if you’re brave enough to put your foot down. Think 0-60mph in less than three seconds.
Caterham Cars CEO Graham Macdonald said: “When we launched the 620R, we knew that we were unleashing a beast upon the world. It’s never been one for the faint-hearted and should really come with its own health warning.
“But we are, of course, sensitive also to those customers who want the ridiculous performance stats without having to worry about donning race overalls to access them.
“The new options mean that customers who want the best of both worlds can have exactly that, whether their aim is to pound around the race tracks of the UK or take a Sunday drive, albeit a deliriously exciting one.”
You can pop in an order for the ‘S’ variant of the 620 right now as well as the S5 chassis, with prices starting from £44,995 if you want if built for you ─ £5,000 less than the 620R.
