Chevy makes Trax with small SUV

Chevrolet is no stranger to creating hulking great big vehicles. It’s also no stranger to creating tiny city cars, so it should probably come as no surprise to learn it’ll shortly be making something for the Goldilocks demographic — a small SUV known as the Chevy Trax.

The Chevy trax will go head to head with the likes of the Nissan Qashqai.

Little is known about the Trax, but it’ll likely be based on the same platform as the Vauxhall/Opel Mokka. Chevy says it will have room for five passengers and provide generous cargo space, which means it’ll face stiff competition from crossovers such as the Nissan Qashqai and Mazda CX-5.

Looks-wise, it seems to have those cars licked. We’re only going off the solitary image Chevy has released thus far, but the Trax seems well-proportioned, has a wide stance and carries a general air of toughness about it. The Chevy badge has looked a little out of place on some of the company’s smaller offerings, but the legendary bow tie suits the Trax down to a tee.

“Trax provides Chevrolet an entry into a growing small SUV segment and delivers the flexibility, great fuel economy and car-like handling that urban explorers require,” said Susan Docherty, President and Managing Director of Chevrolet Europe. “Bring it on,” we replied.

The vehicle will be sold in over 140 markets, alongside the Cruz and Malibu. Rather surprisingly, it will not be available in the US.

Trax is expected to be unveiled properly at the Paris Motor Show in September 2012. We’ll be on hand to fondle it bring you pictures, hands on impressions and — as soon as Chevy passes us a set of keys — a full review. Make sure you check back with us for more info.
