Councils urged to ditch yellow lines

Yellow road lines are an eyesore and should be removed, a top politician has said. Transport Minister Norman Baker has written to local authorities urging them to reduce the number of yellow lines as part of a campaign to “rid the streets of clutter”.

The Liberal Democrat minister believes authorities should instead use restricted parking zones, especially in streets with a single lane of traffic for each direction.

“No one wants to see unnecessary yellow lines blotting our towns and villages when there is an alternative. They are a clear eyesore that can be intrusive and can have a huge impact on the look and feel of our streets, particularly in historic town centres or conservation areas.

“I encourage local authorities to think about the use of restricted parking zones. They can be used to improve the visual impact of the street while providing clear information to motorists.”

Restricted parking zones require a relatively small number of signs that tell motorists if they can or can’t park and during which times. These, in some people’s eyes, are considered less “intrusive” than conventional yellow lines.

Many local authorities have already taken adopted the restricted parking zones approach, including Cheshire East Council, Cornwall, Slough, Warwickshire, Suffolk and Nottingham.
