Ferrari GTC4Lusso T: Meet the V8-powered FF successor

Paris Motor Show 2016: Ferrari has unveiled a brand new version of the GTC4Lusso that ditches a V12 engine and all-wheel drive in favour of a V8 and power to the rear.

The Ferrari GTC4Lusso T has a 3.9-litre V8 that outputs peak torque of 780Nm from 3,000rpm and has a total output of 600bhp, 80bhp fewer than its 6.3-litre V12 brother. It features four-wheel steering but is rear-wheel driven (46:54 bias) so all-wheel drive is absent.

Ferrari has designed the GTC4Lusso T for ‘driving in urban contexts’, meaning it should cope better with traffic jams (not that the original FF was difficult around town). The V12 is meant to be the true grand tourer of the two.

But it is still an absolute monster when it wants to be, with 0-62mph taking 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 199mph, just shy of the V12’s 3.4-second sprint and top speed of 208mph. Only the V12’s 697Nm of torque looks worse on paper, but then again you get all of it from a mere 1,750rpm.

That relatively little performance gap between the two engines can be partly attributed to a Variable Boost Management system that maximises torque delivery based on the gear the car is currently in, as well as adjustments to the gearing, an instant throttle response and none of the dreaded turbo lag.

A more obvious difference between the two engines can be seen when you look at fuel economy. In fact, the V8 GTC4Lusso T has a 30 per cent bigger range, so says Ferrari.

As for technology, expect a 10.25-inch HD display with touchscreen functionality and Apple CarPlay for connecting an iPhone to the infotainment system and access to various apps including Spotify on the off chance you want something other than the V8 soundtrack.

As for looks, you could quite easily make it a spot the difference. The 2+2 arrangement of the GTC4Lusso remains unchanged so expect mixed opinions on its trademark ‘breadvan’ styling.

No word from Ferrari on the price front, but it should come in lower than the £230,430 for the V12 GTC4Lusso you have to pay before any extra goodies.
