Gemballa debuts “world’s first” diamond paint finish

We’ve seen all manner of paint finishes in our time. Glossy, matte, vinyl wrapped, scratched to oblivion. But we have never, until today, heard of a paint finish that consisted of real diamonds.

This astonishing feat of opulence is the brainchild of Gemballa, a German tuning company that claims its creation is a world first. The outfit says that, while other diamond-inspired paint finishes have used ordinary paint mixed with metal pigments, crystals or bits of glass, its solution uses actual diamonds.

Creating it wasn’t as simple as dumping the jewellery of a thousand rappers into a vat of silver paint — that would have resulted in lumpy, lacklustre paintwork. Instead, Gemballa’s solution was to grind the diamonds into tiny fragments. Since diamonds reflect light according to the number of facets, or faces showing, this worked in the company’s favour. The smaller pieces resulted in thousands of facets, which reflect light like a disco ball on ‘roids.

So far, nobody’s publicly ordered the diamond paintwork, but it’s surely only a matter of time before somebody — most probably someone whose name is “Sheik” or Elizabeth Taylor — decides they’re bored with the matte tartan finish on their Bugatti Veyron and taps up Gemballa for a diamond spray job.
