GoPro Hero4 to deliver crazy dash-cam footage in stunning 4K

Say goodbye to grainy dash-cam video. Maybe. GoPro has announced a new range of Hero4 action cameras that promise improved picture quality, higher resolutions and improved frame rates.

Three new versions of the Hero4 have been launched, including the entry-level camera simply called Hero, a mid-range Hero4 Silver and a top-of-the-range Hero4 Black.

All three are going to be excellent for capturing car crashes, humping animals being run over and enormous motorway explosions, but the big daddy Black edition allows 4K video recording at 30fps for the first time, 2.7K at 50fps and 1080p HD at 120fps. The previous camera, the Hero3+ could only manage 4K video at a pretty unusable 15fps.

An improved Protune mode, which lets you tweak your videos in post production, offers customisable settings for colour correction, white balance, sharpness, ISO and exposure – which is great for shooting in low light. Speaking of low light, the Hero4 as Night Lapse and Night Photo modes, which are designed to get better night lapse videos and low light photos.

The $500 (£370) Black edition also features an improved audio system that promises twice the dynamic range of previous GoPros, for better audio, as well as a better analogue to digital convertor lalowing users to connect a wider variety of mics.

The GoPro Hero4 Silver lacks the ultra-high resolution, high frame rate 4K capture of the Black (it’ll capture 1080p at 60fps and 720p at 120fps), but has benefits of its own. Hero4 Silver comes with a built-in touch display, that acts as a viewfinder and lets you have easy access to settings. It’s set to cost $400 (£290).

The standard Hero, meanwhile, records 1080p at 30fps and comes with an integrated battery and waterproof casing. It’s also incredibly cheap, costing just £100.
