Introducing the new 575hp BMW X5 M and X6 M

BMW has announced two updated M models. The second-generation X5 M and X6 M succeed the 2009 cars, bringing with them more torque, more power and improved eco-credentials.

Both the BMW X5 M and X6 M have a new 4.4-litre M TwinPower Turbo V8 with two TwinScroll turbochargers that generates 575hp and 750Nm (553lb/ft) of torque. 0 to 62mph takes 4.2 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 155mph.

Even though horsepower and torque is four and 10 per cent better on the first-generation models, respectively, emissions have dropped by 20 per cent. 258g/km of CO2 passes out the exhaust, while fuel economy is 25.4mpg.

BMW’s xDrive four-wheel-drive system makes an appearance. Power is typically sent to all wheels, but every last drop of torque can be transferred to the back or front axle if the need arises. An eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Launch Control lets you leave other road users in your wake with virtually zero effort.

The BMW X5 M and X6 M ride 10mm lower than the standard models and have Pirelli P Zero tyres. There’s also firmer suspension with Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation and self-levelling air suspension at the rear.

Dynamic Performance Control with Comfort, Sport and Sport+ lets you adjust the level of insanity as you cruise along. Six-piston calipers at the front and single-piston calipers at the back bring you to a halt and save 1.6kg of weight compared with the old brakes.

A new addition is M Dynamic Mode, which lets you get the back out a bit before the electronics reign in your stupidity. In addition, an optimised version of Dynamic Stability Control also keeps you out of trouble.

Standard gizmos includes Adaptive Dynamic Suspension, Cruise Control with brake function, Cornering Brake Control, Hill Descent Control, rear Park Distance Control, automatic wipers, automatic headlights and Driving Assistant.

That’s on top of the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats, BMW infotainment system with DAB digital radio and navigation, head-up display unique to the M model, 20GB hard disc and Bluetooth.

Inside is a suitably sporty M interior, which includes M electric front seats in Merino leather, M leather steering wheel, M gearshift lever, various embossed M logos, anthracite roof liner and aluminium interior trim.

Prices start from £90,170 for the BMW X5 M. The X6 M starts from £93,070. Expect it to arrive in dealerships on the 11th of April, 2015.
