Even after a star-studded London launch party and a near-constant stream of Jaguar XE news, there are unknowns when it comes to the BMW 3-Series rival. But at least we know more about what powers it.
We have learned the Jaguar XE will get two versions of a diesel ‘Ingenium’ engine. The first and potentially most interesting is a 163PS entry-level 2.0-litre diesel, which offers 380Nm of torque, 75mpg fuel economy and a mere 99g/km of CO2 emissions.
The second is a more powerful version of the same diesel. It offers a more potent 178hp and 429Nm. Fuel economy and CO2 emissions figures are unknown, but we expect it to be similarly frugal. Much of the efficiency across the range will be down to a lightweight, predominantly aluminium chassis.
Then there’s a 2.0-litre turbo petrol and a 340hp 3.0-litre V6 for the Jaguar XE S variant, the latter of which manages 450Nm and 0 to 62mph in 4.9 seconds in the Jaguar F-Type V6 S. So it should be spritely, to say the least.
A Jaguar XE SVR version is also on the cards, although there are no new specifics to mull over when it comes to just how mental it will be. Current reports suggest a 5.0-litre V8 supercharged lump with somewhere in the region of 489hp is likely.
Expect the Jaguar XE to cost around £30,000, assuming it wants to have a chance against entrenched rivals like the BMW 3 Series. Jaguar will be revealing all at the Paris Motor Show from October 2nd.
