Land Rover Discovery Sport Ingenium engine promises improved efficiency

Land Rover has announced the introduction of the Ingenium engine in the Discovery Sport, bringing with it the promise of improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

The Discovery Sport, which was launched in September 2014, can be ordered now with an Ingenium engine, adding to the existing 2.2-litre SD4 diesel already available.

A choice of either a 150PS or 180PS power output is available, the former capable of 129g/km of CO2 and a claimed 57.7mpg when paired with a six-speed manual gearbox and the latter 139g/km and 53.3mpg regardless of whether you opt for the manual or the pricier nine-speed automatic.

Torque is a healthy 380Nm from 1,750rpm in the 150PS engine, while it climbs to 430Nm from 1,750rpm in the 180PS variant. Performance figures are unknown, but the numbers suggest a healthy dose of poke as the 190PS, 420Nm SD4 diesel can achieve 0 to 62mph in 8.4 seconds.

Speaking of which, it will be interesting to see just how much more efficient the Ingenium engine compared with the SD4, which achieves 162g/km of CO2 and 44.9mpg.

It’s worth noting the introduction of the Ingenium brings with it a five-seat-only option instead of the 5+2 arrangement standard in the TD4 and 18-inch alloy wheels with low-resistance wheels for the 150PS TD4, which Land Rover classes as an ‘E-Capability’ vehicle.

Land Rover Programmes director Murray Dietsch said: “Land Rover’s new family of Ingenium engines is truly class leading. By introducing it to the Discovery Sport, we can now offer enhanced fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions, while improving overall performance.

“The Ingenium engine confirms Discovery Sport’s position as the most versatile and capable compact premium SUV in the world.”

A basic spec SE TD4 150PS with a manual gearbox starts from the new lower price of £30,695. Service intervals have been changed from every 16,000 miles to every 21,000, potentially lowering the running costs.

A new HSE Black trim level has been added, building on the range-topping HSE Luxury. Starting from £41,250, it comes with the Black Pack comprised a contrast roof, gloss black 20-inch alloys and privacy glass.

The Ingenium engine debuted in the Jaguar XE. Orders can be placed now for a Discovery Sport Ingenium, with deliveries expected in September 2015. Check out our full review on the Evoque-bettering 4×4.
