Lexus to reveal ‘polarizing’ LF-C2 convertible at LA Auto Show

Lexus will use the LA auto show to unveil the LF-C2 — a new convertible concept that Vice President of Lexus Europe, Alain Uyttenhoven, labels as ‘polarizing’.

In order to build anticipation for the concept, Lexus has released a teaser image of the new convertible showing its silhouette sans roof. The picture leaves a lot to the imagination, but what’s clear is a pronounced bump behind the back seats.

Very little else is known about the LF-C2 at present, apart from the fact it’s essentially a drop-top Lexus RC coupé. As a result, potential buyers can expect similar engine choices including a 2.5-litre V6 petrol, a petrol-electric hybrid and a top-of-the-range 5.0-litre V8.

In a candid interview with Telegraph Cars, Alain Uyttenhoven said: “With our [comparatively small] share of the premium car market, the only way to compete is to stand out. We need to get more emotional appeal into our cars, not only through improved driving dynamics, but also through design.

“What we are seeing at the moment [in customer clinics] is that the kind of design language that we have developed for the NX and our future models finds a lot of aficionados. Some people say ‘it’s not for me’, but a lot of others want to have something different and like the fact it’s polarizing.”

Another Lexus concept, the LF-LC sports car, is likely to be produced in the new year. According to Uyttenhoven: “We always intended it to just be a show car, but we are now looking at ways that we can actually build it.”

The LF-LC will be lexus’s most expensive car, but it will be much cheaper than its previous sports car flagship, the £343,000 LFA. A production model will be released at some point in 2015.

Do you like polarizing vehicles that seperate you from other motorists? If so, then the new Lexus could be just the car you’re looking for.
