McLaren has expanded its entry-level Sports Series range of cars with two track-only models, the 570S GT4 and 570S Sprint.
The new 570S GT4 is said to focus on lap times, a task it achieves with a myriad race-specific modifications including a unique aerodynamic package made up of a high level rear wing mounted on aluminium pylons, larger front splitter and reprofiled floor assembly.
It also gets a GT3-inspired bonnet with radiator exit ducts, which help the 570S GT4 cut through the air and improve cooling. Slick Pirelli tyres, wider track on the front and rear, an FIA-approved rollcage and fire extinguisher system are also included.
Meanwhile Penske two-way adjustable motorsport dampers with coil-over springs on the front and rear, cast magnesium alloy wheels and an on-board air jacking system complete the package.
The engine is the same 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 found in the standard 570S mated to the same seven-speed SSG automatic gearbox, which sends power to the rear wheels.
Details of the 570S Sprint, which is dedicated to private track days and is therefore unrestricted by racing regulations, will be unveiled ‘in the coming weeks’.
The 570S GT4 is designed to open up racing to a wider audience, as McLaren Automotive chief executive officer Mike Flewitt explained: “As with road-going models wearing a McLaren badge, the 570S GT4 and 570S Sprint models are about being an engaging and exciting drive.
“The launch of the Sports Series has broadened McLaren to a new audience, introducing technologies to the sports car market and to a new group of customers.
“The 570S GT4 is doing the same in the motorsport world, and will bring the opportunity to own and race a McLaren – previously limited to a very small number of people – to a much wider group.”
McLaren’s 570S GT4 follows on from the 650S GT3, which has so far racked up four seasons of racing.
A standard 570S can go from 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and 0-124mph in 9.5 seconds, thanks to having 570PS (562bhp) and 443lb/ft of torque.
The McLaren 570S GT4 will make its public debut at the opening round of the British GT Championship, which begins at Brands Hatch on the 16th of April, 2016, before being eligible for all GT4 homologated championships from the 2017 season.
Expect to pay from £159,000 – a slight premium on the 570S, making it a bit of a bargain. If you ignore the need for a separate trailer to move it around, that is.
