Mercedes S600 flagship is top of the Benz food chain

There’s a new Merc flagship in town, and it goes by the name S600.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new flagship model in its S-Class line-up. Meet the S600. The fresh new top model, unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show, packs a 5.9-litre V12 biturbo engine that churns out 530hp, so it’s noticeably more meaty than the 5.5-litre, 517hp lump that powered the previous S600.

It's the biggest, baddest Merc yet.

Torque is rated at a quite enormous 612lb ft, all of which is available from the  minute the rev counter hits 1,900rpm. Ask your driver to mash the go-pedal and it’ll waft hastily from 0 to 62mph in 4.6 seconds, hitting 155mph before an electronic limiter is activated.

The S600 is no sports car, though. It’s available exclusively in a long wheelbase guise, so it’s geared squarely towards dictators and rappers. Heads of state might want to take a peek too, the S600 is said to return a fairly respectable 25.4mpg, which should appease the green lobby. Just don’t mention the lofty 259g/km CO2 emissions.

As you might expect, the Mercedes-Benz S600 will have some pretty advanced tech. Merc’s touch-sensitive infotainment control system will be available, as is a new anti-crash tech known as COLLISSION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS (it’s so good they had to capitalize it all). The system can trigger auto braking at speeds of up to 124mph, and will even initiate emergency stops below 25mph to stop you hitting slow-moving traffic. Or people protesting at your wealth.

Prices are still to be revealed. More on this as we get it.
