We went up north to sunny Yorkshire to review the new Kia Soul. So is it as bold and wacky as Kia want us to believe?
When the Soul first emerged, few could doubt it stood out like a sore thumb, with a bold, wacky design that made most other vehicles look a bit dull in comparison. This latest car continues that trend, but far from being daring, it’s actually more sensible than a green salad — but in a good way.
It’s larger than before, so it’s easier to get get in and out of, while its boot opening is also bigger so you can dump your shopping in and out with ease — ideal for those exciting, wacky trips to and from Netto.
The interior is relatively modern and funky. The dashboard has a very upright stance with lots of curved surfaces. There’s good tech, too — including high-quality optional Infinity speakers that light up in time with the music and a sat-nav touch screen that can show pictures and play videos.
The new Kia Soul packs three different driving modes: normal, sport and comfort, which vary the level of stiffness in the steering. Don’t get too excited, though — the steering feels incredibly light in all three modes, so it’s more of a gimmick than anything.
When it comes to engines, you won’t be spoilt for choice. Kia gives you the option of a 1.6 petrol or 1.6 turbodiesel. Both deliver similar power, performance and economy, but we preferred the diesel engine as it packs more torque, allowing for a smoother drive.
Both engines allow the Kia Soul to complete 0-60mph in about 10 and a half seconds. The diesel engine can reach a top speed of 112mph whereas the petrol reaches a top speed of 115mph.
Overall, the Kia Soul is good to drive, nice to look at and is easy to recommend. Just don’t buy one thinking you’re cool and funky. Ultimately this is a car that’s just as likely to appeal to grannies as it is to funky hipsters.
