BMW has dusted the shoulders off its 7 Series limo. The updated car now features minor aesthetic tweaks, including a new kidney grille with fewer vertical slats, a lower air intake dissected by a pair of horizontal chrome bars and rear tail lights that are finished in a slightly different shade of red. Subtle, huh?
Inside, the new BMW 7 Series gets a new iDrive system with separate controls at the front and rear, as well as a pair of optional 9.2-inch tablet-style widescreen displays that appear to float behind the headrests on the front seats. The pews can now be ordered with Dakota or Nappa (that’s sheep to you) leather in either ivory white or Veneto beige, the ceiling has been raised to offer half an inch more headroom and the cabin has better soundproofing.
Speaking of sound, BMW’s also upgraded the choice of stereos. Customers can now specify a new Bang & Olufsen surround sound audio setup that uses 16 separate speakers with Dirac Dimensions technology — a system designed to recreate the acoustics of a reference listening room or studio.
There are chances in the engine room, too. The top-spec 760i model will use a 544hp, 6-litre V12 that does 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds. The 750i is no slouch, though. Its V8 petrol engine will get you to 62mph in 4.8 seconds. If all-out speed isn’t a major requirement, the 3-litre six-cylinder jobby in the 740i produces a muscular 315bhp, while the ActiveHybrid 7 model uses that same engine, alongside a 55hp electric motor to deliver 349hp, 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds and 41.5mpg.
