New Honda Civic Type R promises 167mph top speed

Fans of fast Hondas will appreciate three teaser images and fresh details of the new Civic Type R, which will be unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

Honda says the new Type R’s 2.0-litre direct injection VTEC Turbo will be good for 167mph, making it faster than its front-wheel drive competitors and a lot of restricted fast German machinery. This is, of course, an internal figure so could well change.

The new Type R is said to benefit from ‘extensive aerodynamic development and testing’, resulting in ‘exceptional high speed stability and high levels of downforce’.

A completely flat underside and rear diffuser help stick the car to the road. Meanwhile a bespoke rear wing pleases the boy racer contingent and provides downforce.

There’s also a wide front splitter and deep side skirts for further airflow improvements, while the front bumper directs the air around the wheels in a bid to reduce drag and improve stability.

We now know the new Type R will be fitted with Brembo brakes developed specifically for the car, unique 19-inch alloy wheels and various external design modifications designed to keep everything cool. Let’s not forget the Championship White paintjob synonymous with Type R vehicles.

Expect to hear performance figures, UK specs and other details as we head towards the big unveiling in March 2015. Stay tuned. The teaser pictures await.
