New Mazda MX-5 to celebrate 25th anniversary

Mazda has set a date for the unveiling of its fourth-generation MX-5 roadster.

Any true car fan worth his salt will know the Mazda MX-5 is one of the best open-top cars around. So you can understand why we were excited to learn a new model will surface later on this year. Wig tape at the ready.

Mazda said to clear our diary on the 3rd and 4th of September as that is when the fourth-generation MX-5 roadster will be unveiled in Spain, Japan and the US simultaneously.

A few days later ‘enthusiasts from across Europe’ will come together to celebrate 25 years since the MX-5 first arrived in a hopefully sunny Barcelona.

This is usually the point where we would give you the lowdown on how it looks, differs from its predecessor and anything else you should know. Unfortunately if we did we would have to kill you. Only kidding. Mazda is keeping details close to its chest so we can only speculate.

“The MX-5 is the product that best epitomises Mazda’s convention-defying spirit and our love of driving. It has been grabbing people’s attention for 25 years, and with the new-generation model we’re aiming to share this passion with yet another generation of drivers,” Mazda Motor Europe President and CEO Jeff Guyton said.

Nearly 945,000 Mazda MX-5s have sold since the car went on sale in 1989. The car became famous for its lightweight design, affordable price and ‘perfect’ 50/50 weight distribution between the front and rear.

A Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe 2.0-litre 25th Anniversary Limited Edition, which is a special version of the current model, will go on sale from August 1st. Only 750 will be built.
