Good news, eco motorists. Nissan has announced the 2016 Leaf is capable of travelling further than before, thanks to the addition of a larger battery.
The 30kWh battery option gives the new Leaf a 155 mile (250km) range on a single charge, according to Nissan, which is a 25 per cent increase on its predecessor. That puts it ahead of other electric cars on the market with the exception of the far pricier and not really comparable Tesla Model S.
It shares the same dimensions as the existing 24kWh so no exterior or interior space is lost and only weighs 21kg more so the difference in handling should be impossible to notice.
Upgrading to the 30kWh battery will be possible on Acenta and Tekna trim levels. An eight-year or 100,000 mile warranty gives owners peace of mind when it comes to resale value.
Nissan has also updated the Leaf’s NissanConnect EV infotainment system with a new interface, digital radio receiver, simplified activation process, improved navigation and new features including a charging map that shows you where you can top-up the battery and if someone is already using it. It is available on Acenta and Tekna models.
Various subtle exterior design changes have also been applied to the new Leaf, including the addition of a bronze colour and a new roof-mounted aerial.
An Acenta with the 30kWh battery starts from £24,490, rising to £25,940 if you also want the 6kW charger and solar cell. That’s about a £1,600 premium on the equivalent 24kWh model. A Tekna 30kWh, meanwhile, starts from £26,490.
Sales will begin in December 2015 in the UK.
