New Seat Ibiza Cupra gets a power boost and facelift

Seat has announced the new Ibiza Cupra ahead of its 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show reveal. Set to go on sale next year, the facelifted hatchback benefits from a power increase and a few aesthetic tweaks.

A new 1.8-litre TSI petrol engine (seen in the VW Polo GTI) takes power up from 180PS to 192PS, while torque has increased from 250Nm to 350Nm and is available from a mere 1,450rpm.

0 to 62mph now takes 6.7 seconds – three-tenths faster than its predecessor – and the top speed is 146mph. Fuel econony, meanwhile, is 47mpg. A six-speed manual gearbox is the only option.

The new Ibiza Cupra benefits from Cupra Drive Profile as standard, which allows you to adjust the handling characteristics in conjunction with Cupra Selective Suspension, which has comfort and sport modes.

It also has 17-inch alloys, XDS electronic differential lock, ESP electronic stability system, hill-start assist, tiredness detection and multi-collision brake as standard, in addition to a full-fat five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

Subtle exterior and interior tweaks separate the Cupra model from the rest, including the addition of Apple CarPlay to the Seat Full Link infotainment system (compatible with iOS and Android smartphones), a new steering wheel design and a new instrument panel.

Seat has also announced two new apps, the first of which is DriveApp that allows the driver to customise the touchscreen to display anything from local weather to contacts.

It can also read out posts from Facebook and Twitter, has a ‘Challenger’ mode that teaches you ways to drive more efficiently and can help you relocate your car if you forget where you left it.

The second app is ConnectApp, which allows you to make a call using gestures on the touchscreen and can be customised to be used to display calendar appointments. It works in conjunction with MirrorLink, a technology that mirrors what you can see on your phone on the display.

No word on a price just yet. We’ll keep you posted.
