Rory Reid grabs the mighty Nissan GT-R by the scruff of its neck to see whether the 45th Anniversary edition is as capable as its predecessor.
Few cars are held in such high regard among the Gran Turismo generations as the GT-R, largely because it succeeded the much-loved Skyline R34 but also because it’s basically a computer with wheels that can chew up and spit out a lot of supercars.
The Nissan GT-R in its latest 45th Anniversary edition form is utterly ridiculous. 0-62mph takes 2.8 seconds, while the handling is so impressive you will always feel like it’s constantly yawning at your driving skills, hoping you give it even the slightest challenge.
Push hard and the GT-R will be constantly reading your driving and the conditions to ensure it makes it around corners at speeds you think would be impossible. But be warned, it can and will snap back hard if you get too cocky, even with four-wheel drive.
And yet the celebratory model has been made a tad softer and more livable. Disengage the scary R modes, opt for the comfort setting and you can quite reasonably drive around town without losing feeling in your spine. It can even do motorway cruising although the lack of 7th gear is a boon.
Somehow, then, the new GT-R is faster yet capable of fitting in with normal life, which makes it a fine evolution before whatever replaces it in years to come. As Rory aptly put it, “[Nissan] tried to put Godzilla on a leash and to some extent they have”.
