Porsche has been toying with the idea of a 911 Hybrid for some time, but now we can report a final decision will be made by the end of 2015.
When asked about a 911 hybrid, Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller told Automotive News: “Why not? That is a technique which we at Porsche are very familiar with, so we can suppose that we could have plug-ins all over the model range, not only to save fuel but also boost the performance of these cars.”
He said the 911 would “possibly” be the next car to feature a hybrid powertrain and that Porsche leaders are currently “negotiating about that”. He added: “We are firmly convinced that the plug-in technology is the solution for the nearer future.”
Porsche is no stranger to hybrids. It used one in the Panamera, Cayenne and the 918 Spyder hypercar that competes with the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1.
The thing is, the 911 has been around a long time and is loved by purists worldwide. No doubt a decision to change a proven recipe is a decision the German manufacturer will be taking anything but lightly.
Given the instant power you get from an electric motor and the improvements to fuel ecomomy and CO2 emissions, a 911 hybrid may not be such a bad idea.
The Porsche 918 has a 4.6-litre V8 that produces 612hp and an electric motor that takes the total to an astonishing 887hp. 0-62mph takes 2.8 seconds and fuel economy is a claimed 85mpg.
